This Big Day for Song Hye-Kyo and Song Joong-Ki – Song Hye-Kyo and Song Joong-Ki wedding
SEOUL – Two South Korean stars who played lovers in a TV drama that took Asia by storm last year tied the knot in real life on Tuesday, October 31 in a highly-anticipated wedding.
Actress Song Hye-Kyo, 35, and actor Song Joong-Ki, 32, who played the two leads in the military romance ‘Descendants of the Sun’, married in a star-studded ceremony in Seoul. The wedding was said to be private, but photos were posted on social media.
The ceremony took place with some 300 invited guests, consisting of family and friends, with strict security.
The area around Song’s wedding venue, The Shilla Seoul’s Yeong Bin Gwan, a Korean-style banquet annex, was swarming with press and fans Tuesday afternoon. However, no press conference or photo op for the media took place.
Security personnel guarded entrances to the annex from early Tuesday morning, while preparations were in full swing inside the annex courtyard for the outdoor ceremony.
Actor Hwang jung-min, who arrived at 3:25 p.m., was among the first of the celebrity guests to arrive.
International fans from Asian countries holding signs bearing the Song couple’s names and other travelers had begun to gather at the parking lot outside the annex as early as noon. Some were here coincidentally, while others had arranged to visit Korea specifically for the wedding.
For known, the drama tells the story of an army captain sent on a peacekeeping mission to a fictional war-torn country, Uruk, where he meets and falls in love with a surgeon working with a medical NGO.
It enjoyed huge popularity at home and across Asia, garnering billions of views on Chinese video-streaming sites and winning a thumbs-up from Thailand’s junta chief, who praised the main characters’ sense of duty.
The 16-episode series was hailed as reviving the so-called “Hallyu”, or Korean Wave, of K-pop and K-dramas that spread across Asia and beyond since the early 2000s.
